With everyone being instructed to stay indoors until further notice, many of us suddenly have time to both watch movies we’ve never seen before as well as revisit old favourites.
If you’re looking for something to pass the time or just need a laugh amidst all the chaos, here are a few funny films we recommend you check out ---all available on CTV Movies.
Big Daddy

Arguably one of his stronger efforts, Big Daddy features Adam Sandler’s trademark bumbling ridiculousness without being too over-the-top. The Sandman stars as directionless toll collector Sonny Koufax, who decides to take in a young boy named Julian…it also stars Cole and Dylan Sprouse in their first-ever film roles and Jon Stewart at his most boyishly handsome, so there’s that, too.
Bottle Rocket

Marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership, Bottle Rocket is both Wes Anderson’s first film starring frequent collaborators Luke and Owen Wilson (or Owen C. Wilson, as he was credited back then) and his first feature film ever. Anderson’s aesthetic has definitely become more sophisticated since Bottle Rocket was released in the mid-90s, but looking back at the acclaimed director’s humble beginnings is always a good time.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

We love us some Steve Martin and a pre-Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises Michael Caine. Martin and Caine’s characters in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, both con men, both insist that there’s only room for one of them on the French Riviera, but we beg to differ. We’ve also got to mention the late, great Glenne Headly, who refuses to let co-stars Martin and Caine outshine her.
A Fish Called Wanda

Three words: Jamie. Lee. Curtis. The fact that she wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for her turn as the titular Wanda Gershwitz in heist film A Fish Called Wanda is a crime (pun very much intended).

How can you deny the power of the soothing balm that is Ghostbusters? A quintessential ‘80s action-comedy, Ghostbusters has got something for everyone – the laughs, the suspense, the mild horror, and even a little bit of romance. There’s a reason why the franchise continues to live on 30+ years after its inception.
Groundhog Day

If you’re already watching Ghostbusters, why not wedge a little bit more Bill Murray into your schedule? Groundhog Day features Murray at his best, most loveably deadpan peak and also gave us a story that’s frequently been imitated, spoofed, and referenced in the years since the movie’s release.
In a World…

One of the more modern entries in this list, In a World… chronicles the story of Carol Solomon, a vocal coach who aspires to be that person who does the voiceovers for trailers---a.k.a. the infamous “in a world” guy. In a World… isn’t just an underrated comedy but also a showcase for the ridiculously talented Lake Bell, who wrote, directed, co-produced and stars in the film.
A League of Their Own

If there’s anything we’ve taken away from the last couple weeks, it’s that Tom Hanks is resilient as hell---and A League of Their Own just proves that point further. Playing the manager of an all-female baseball team---the Rockford Peaches---that succeeds against all odds, League is basically the perfect feel-good movie.
Stranger Than Fiction

Comedians often take on dramatic movie roles to prove that they’re capable of more than impressions and one-liners---Jim Carrey in The Truman Show, Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig in The Skeleton Twins, and Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me? are just a few examples. 2006’s Stranger than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell as bored IRS agent Harold Crick, is probably one of the more successful films of this ilk, as it manages to be equal parts funny, moving, and thought-provoking.
This Is the End

Maybe this one hits a little too close to home, but if you’re looking for a way to laugh about the state of the world right now (and/or laugh at people in situations much more ridiculous than the one we’re currently in), This Is the End is the movie for you. Plus, the cast---which includes Seth Rogen, Mindy Kaling, Craig Robinson, and Rihanna---is damn-near unbeatable.
