Bagged milk. Ketchup chips. Hawaiian pizza. Canadian comics. What do these things have in common? They’re not all edible (unless you’re a cannabal) but you probably had no idea that they’re all unique to Canada.

Our True North unsung heros deserve to be celebrated, which is why Just for Laughs is bringing us the 20th edition of Homegrown Comics this year. Hosted by Letterkenny's K. Trevor Wilson, Homegrown features the best bright-eyed and bushy-tailed comics from across the country. Want to learn more about these promising up-and-comers? Here are the performers who will make you MDR—that’s the French equivalent of LOL. The more you know!

K. Trevor Wilson – HOST

K. Trevor Wilson, the self-proclaimed “Man Mountain of Comedy,” is best known for performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Jeff Ross’ Roast Battles, 6 consecutive appearances at Just For Laughs, and as Squirrely Dan on the hit show Letterkenny. He is a Juno nominated recording artist, a CSA nominated actor, two-time Canadian Comedy Award winner, three-time COCA Comedian of the year, and a former Canadian 18 & under Doubles Platform Tennis champion.

Gavin Matts

Gavin Matts is a stand up from Vancouver, B.C. now based out of Los Angeles. He was the most recent winner of the SiriusXM Top Comic Competition, the biggest stand-up competition in Canada. He's been a feature artist at festivals like JFL Northwest, Oddblock Comedy Fest, Halifax Comedy Fest, Bumbershoot, and more.

Nick Nemeroff

Nick Nemeroff has performed in the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Oddblock, Hot Tub with Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal, Power Violence, and Put Your Hands Together with Rhea Butcher and Cameron Esposito. In 2018 Nick won Best Breakout Artist at the I Heart Jokes Awards in Toronto, was nominated for Best Breakout Comedian at the Canadian Comedy Awards.

Cara Connors

Cara Connors is a former Chicagoan-turned-Canadian and comedian on the rise. She’s the creator, writer and star of two original digital series for CBC comedy (“Cara Cooks” and “Every BLANK Ever”), a current semi-finalist in Sirius XM’s Top Comic Contest and will appear in the nationally televised Winnipeg Comedy Festival airing on CBC.

Paul Rabliauskas

Paul Rabliauskas is an accomplished young stand-up comedian and a member of the Poplar River First Nation. Paul has performed stand-up comedy across North America in theatres, comedy clubs, community centres and schools. Paul has hosted shows on both APTN and NCI FM and recently filmed his debut comedy special ‘Backwards,’ which will be released in 2018.

Adrienne Fish

Torontonian Adrienne Fish has been making her mark on Canada’s comedy scene with an appearance on CBC’s The Debaters and a nomination by NOW Magazine as Toronto’s Best Female Standup. Touring across the US and Canada, she’s opened for household names such as Doug Stanhope and performed in prestigious festivals like the Winnipeg Comedy Festval, Halifax Comedy Festival, Hubcap Comedy Festival, Atlanta’s Laughing Skull and JFL42.

Kyle Brownrigg

A newcomer to the comedy community, Kyle Brownrigg has performed in festivals, arenas and on CBC. Kyle’s material is inpired by his own embarassment and personal struggles. Never one to shy away, he makes his work relatable to any audience.

Pat Burtscher

Since 2004, Pat Burtscher has earned international critical claim as an exciting standup with performances at clubs and festivals including Melbourne International Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Singapore Comedy Fringe, and JFL42. 

Jacob Samuel

Jacob Samuel is a Canadian stand-up comic who has been featured on national TV (the CBC) and radio (also the CBC). His jokes were once reviewed as “consistent and well executed, with no exceptionally bad or good pieces.” Jacob is also an internationally-published humour cartoonist.

Jarrett Campbell

Jarrett Campbell stormed onto the Toronto comedy circuit 4 years ago, quickly becoming one of the fastest rising talents in Canadian comedy. With appearances on the Dark Comedy Festival in Toronto and NXNE Festival already under his belt, Jarrett was the breakout star of the Cottage Country Comedy Festival in 2014, with performances that landed him a showcase on the Best of the Fest and garnered him a slot on the Dark Comedy Tour.

Hoodo Hersi

Hoodo Hersi is a Toronto-based comedian who has performed in clubs and festivals all over Canada and the United States, including the Winnipeg Comedy Festival airing on the CBC, the 12th annual New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, Boston Women in Comedy Festival, and Toronto’s SheDot Festival. She was selected as an Audible New Voice at SF Sketchfest 2018 and has opened for Baron Vaughn, Moshe Kasher, and Eric Andre among others.

Brandon Ash Mohammed

Brandon Ash-Mohammed is a Tim Sims Award nominated comedian, a Telefilm New Voices Award winning writer, and the creator of The Ethnic Rainbow (Canada’s first & only comedy show for LGBT comedians of colour). Brandon was recently featured in the CBC/TVO documentary Stand Up Toronto which debuted in early 2018 to much acclaim. 

Homegrown Comics will be recorded live at JFL and air later this year. The live show goes down Saturday, July 28 in Montreal at L’Astral and tickets can be purchased here.
