According to the Internet, either Walter Benjamin or Winston Churchill famously said, “History is written by the victors.” If this is true then the victors in the great state of Texas are quite obviously white people, judging by the history recorded in their school’s textbooks.
Last night The Nightly Show reported on the Texas Board of Education’s controversial changes to its school history books and its move to stop anyone from fact-checking them. These books are used across the country so American children trying to learn about American history will find no mention of the KKK and Jim Crow, while slavery is severely downplayed to the point where “slave trade” is referred to as “Atlantic triangular trade”. This didn’t sit well with Larry Wilmore who decided to take matters into his own hands by creating a historical text of his own.
Wilmore took a more accurate, yet still kid-friendly book called “Goodnight Slavery” to some young school children to teach them the grim realities of their home country. This may not sound super funny on the surface but The Nightly Show is better than anyone at wringing laughs out of unjust situations so heat up a pot of Texas chili and get entertained/infuriated at this latest piece:
