So sorry we waited until the last minute to post our long-awaited JFL42 picks. The annual festival starts today and with 42 acts spread out across Toronto you’ve probably had a very hard time deciding who to check out. The good thing is that you can’t really lose! The talent at this year’s fest is insane and with the innovative pass system in effect it’s possible to see EVERYTHING for one low price. Here are some suggestions as to who to see if you haven’t already decided, but don’t take our word for it, get out there and explore because you can’t lose!

Trevor Noah

This year’s headliners include Bill Burr, Craig Ferguson, Patton Oswalt, Miranda Sings, Hannibal Buress, John Mulaney and Chris Hardwick so it’s definitely tough to choose just one. We’re obviously a bit biased but we’d recommend Trevor Noah’s show on September 26. It’s probably the last time he’ll perform stand-up for a while as he takes over the Daily Show a mere two days later.

The Alternative Show hosted by Andy Kindler

Andy’s legendary alt shows were born at the Montreal JFL festival and give fans the chance to see some of the festival’s top acts on one bill. You never know who’ll show up but when Kindler curates it’s always excellent. Try to catch AT LEAST one of the three on either Sept 31, Oct 1 or Oct 2.

Rhys Darby

You’ve probably seen him as Murray on Flight of the Conchords and now you can see what he’s really like (he’s very funny). We caught his act in Montreal this year and if you like high energy, physical storytelling then this Kiwi is for you.

Joe Mande

Billed as “The Drake of Comedy” as well as an “Internet Rascal” Mande has been dominating comedy lately with prestigious writing gigs on shows like Parks and Recreation, an amazing Twitter feed and the release of the first ever “Comedy Mix Tape”. If you like fresh jokes with a modern perspective then definitely go see Joe while he revels in the limelight of the 6ix.

Kate Berlant

If you’re looking for something a little different this year then definitely go check out Kate Berlant. Her humour is surreal and totally original and this is a good chance to see her before she becomes the next big thing.

Chris Gethard

You might recognize Chris from one of his many appearances on shows like Inside Amy Schumer, Parks and Recreation, and The Office but he’s more than just an actor. He currently helms The Chris Gethard Show, which went from oddball cable access show to oddball actual cable show, and tours all over brining his honest and very funny stand-up to the masses.

Above all else, you should get out there and check out the locals.  The best part is that if go see them and end up falling in love you’ll be able to see them all the time because they live here. If you don’t like them you can continue being ignorant and go on living your boring life.! Sorry, that was harsh. Anyway here are this year’s hometown champions:

(Funny as Hell, The Strombo Show, and CBC Radio’s The Debaters)

(Just For Laughs, Edinburgh Fringe)

(Winner of Sirius XM’s Top Comic 2014)

(All-star sketch from alumni of Picnicface, The Sketchersons, Tony Ho and Peter ‘n Chris)

(Off-the-wall sketch from Steph Tolev and Allison Hogg)

(Two of Canada’s best on one bill!)

(Too many awards and festivals to mention, trust us on this one)

(Catch rising stars battling it out for the title of Top Comic with hosting by Harland Williams!)

(A podcast AND a stand-up show that celebrates feminism from local faves Natalie Norman and Jess Beaulieu)

(Yet another opportunity to sample the best of what’s next in Canadian comedy!)

JFL42 runs from today until October 4 so grab your pass now and overdose on comedy!
