Trends in comedy have a tendency to change rapidly. Popular stars may stay in the limelight for decades, but novelty acts with a specific niche have a tendency to come and go. Two classic examples: Pee-wee Herman and Cheech and Chong. In the ’70s, the latter duo started on stage, achieving enormous success with a brand of marijuana-fuelled high jinks that resulted in a series of successful comedy albums. When they made the leap to the big screen with 1978’s Up in Smoke, this low budget oddity became a surprise hit, resulting in a run of seven movies in seven years. Since then, the duo has been absent from movie screens, with the exception of a recent concert film and an animated movie, both of which did most of their business on video.

Pee-wee Herman’s window of big-screen glory was similary brief. A few years after appearing in a pair of Cheech and Chong movies (Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, Nice Dreams), the actor’s career took off with the success of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. For the next five years, he kept this character in the limelight with Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Big Top Pee-wee, but an embarrassing arrest put the character out of commission for several years. However, it now seems that Pee-wee, Cheech, and Chong will all be back on the big screen in the not-too-distant future.

According to producer Judd Apatow, Reubens has co-written a script (tentatively titled Pee-wee Takes A Holiday) and he thinks they’re “going to get to do that soon.” As for Cheech and Chong, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that writer-director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, Beerfest) is working on a movie that will take the duo to a fictional festival known as Burning Joint. Chong claims this project “looks really funny” and promises “all sorts of shenanigans.” Given the realities of modern Hollywood, there’s a good chance at least one of these movies will remain unmade, but here’s hoping Pee-wee comes back together with his former collaborators, whether it’s in their movie or his.

And doesn't all this just give you a jumbo craving for Mr. T cereal?
